Article: The Evolution of the Dog Harnesses
Dog harnesses, once only used for sled dogs, have now become
very popular for household pets. The dog harness distributes the weight more
evenly than a collar and thus minimizes choking and slipping out. It also
provides better control over the dog, ensuring a more comfortable and enjoyable
walk for both dog and owner.
Man and dog have a long history together and the use of
collars and harnesses has often been a part of that relationship. In ancient
Egypt collars were used as a way to restrain and identify dogs. The evolution
of the dog harness came about when dogs began to be used to pull sleds in cold,
snowy climates such as Alaska, Canada, Siberia and Greenland. The dog harness
allowed the dog teams to pull sleds farther, faster, and more efficiently. Archaeological
evidence suggests that ancestors of the Alaskan Inuit may well have been the
inventors of the dog harness.
With the dog harness as a ideal tool, sled dogs were able to
travel where no horse, boat, or train could manage. During the late 1800s and
early 1900s sled dogs were used during Alaska's frozen season to move

Arctic and Antarctic expeditions, aiding men in their exploration of these then
Sled dog harnesses continued to evolve over the years into
different types designed for dogs who were hauling freight and for those who
were racing. Even today more harness designs are being developed as
new dog sports are created. For
example, the guard harness is preferred for the new sport of dog skijoring
where a cross-country skier is pulled by his dog!
Since their creation, dog harnesses have continued to evolve
in style, design, and durability. Modern harnesses, such as the high quality
Puppia dog harness, are available in many colors and sizes. Innovations in
materials used allow for increased comfort, breath-ability, and endurance. Dog
owners will enjoy selecting the perfect dog harness for the beloved pet in
